Lifting RTA restrictions
To remove an RTA restriction, such as a driver's licence suspension or a vehicle registration cancellation, you need to pay all your outstanding enforcement orders.
Once we receive payment for all your outstanding enforcement orders we will direct the RTA to lift the restriction. To ensure that you are paying all of your outstanding enforcement orders we recommend you contact us prior to making payment.
Read more information on payment options.
You must check that any restrictions have been lifted before driving. Heavy penalties exist for driving while unlicensed. The RTA will send you written confirmation that your restrictions have been lifted after payment is received.
Contact the RTA before driving to confirm the restrictions are lifted.
Lifting RTA restrictions if fines are unpaid
If you cannot afford to pay your enforcement orders in full and need to apply for a time to pay order, we have the discretion to lift RTA restrictions while fines remain outstanding, under the following circumstances:
- the health or safety of someone dependent on you depends on you driving
- your medical circumstances require you to drive
- you are required to drive for employment, self-employment or prospective employment reasons
- you live in a remote location where there is a poor transport network
- you live in an indigenous community.
- you make six consecutive payments in accordance with your time to pay schedule and you have not previously defaulted on a time to pay order.
Read the RTA restrictions factsheet for more information on lifting RTA restrictions when the enforcement order is unpaid.
To apply to have restrictions lifted on the above grounds, fax a time to pay application along with supporting documents as outlined on the RTA restrictions factsheet.
The application will take at least five working days from the date of receipt to process and you will be notified in writing of the outcome.
We can also lift RTA restrictions if you make six consecutive payments in your time to pay schedule, as long as you have not previously defaulted on a time to pay order.
Contact us to check if you are eligible.
